Spence, Any publisher worth his/her weight...would NOT....I repeat...NOT be offended...by asking questions.....They would tell you... "by all means, have everything reviewed by an attorney...". That in itself, (being offended by this thread) raised the red flag for me..... because I ran into something similar. We, (Wyman Griffith and I)...had the same thing happen to us...by..someone offering a contract to us from California. We were being paid very well.. .for a song to be used as backing for a non profit film but backed by $ from Boeing, and...Keiser's Children's Hospital...and a few others. BUT....being wet behind the ears..(me anyways)...We wanted our Publisher involved.....to give guidance...and to basically represent the song... The folks offering the contract wanted our full allegiance with out.....question. Turns out, we would have been signing the song over outright...and not as a licensed song....They should have been fine with us..having the contract reviewed...and questioning them...but they weren't. It is always wise to question if you aren't sure..... Although I can remember having some of the same very mixed feelings you may be feeling right now,( because of walking away from something...you have your heart set on),it's still wise....to know what's on that contract and have it reviewed. If you write good material, there will be other opportunities.
