Unless you are going to act as a publisher yourself, licensing your tracks, songs and pitching songs, I don’t know many publishers that would take your songs and not expect the 50% publishing rights. Maybe after you have established a track record of securing cuts and success you could leverage your percentage, but until then you NEED the publisher. They don’t need you. This thread contains so much good information and so much misinformation it boggles my mind, but “we are all in it together” so we all learn. John Voorpostel writes: “that they were dealing with an amateur who did not understand the business ..... meaning a difficult relationship and outlook. Why should a publisher, who needs to make money, waste their time with an amateur when there are plenty of pros out there”. John, even so, this is not the issue here. The lack of a reversion clause is, and more importantly how they dealt with one or more of their prospective clients. Amateurs become pros when that first publisher believes in them. Pro’s already have publishers. You gotta start somewhere. Brian Austin Whitney writes: “Perhaps it would be helpful to have some links to these songs to see what level of quality they are actually so interested in plugging or publishing. That might shed some serious light on the entire discussion. If the songs are truly great, then perhaps they really just want to work with your music. If the songs are average or less than average, then it's a scam to start with because the songs wouldn't be competitive in the first place and why would you bother to pitch them to anyone to start with? If they can't judge worthy songs, they'd have to suck as a publisher and song plugger both. So how good are these songs?” Brian come on man! You are asking 40,000 members to listen to and judge songs that David and I submitted as being publisher worthy? Opinions are like a**holes. Everyone has one. No two will be the same. I fear that this would only create a feeding frenzy and take away from the real concerns noted in this post. I always welcome anyone to visit my website and e-mail me their thoughts.
