The reason I mentioned an advance is that most legit publisher are happy to offer a reversion clause if they aren't going to work with the songs after 2 or 3 years. If they are so hell bent that they need to hold on to the publishing longer, they should offer compensation up in exchange for a longer time period or no reversion if they are serious. The reality is that nothing about this deal sounds remotely legit. Real publishers aren't also usually song plugger for others in their spare time. They focus on 1 thing. A real publisher would NEVER want to hand over a worthy song to a competitor publisher. That's fairly ridiculous. (The exception being if they didn't work in the genre that the writer was writing in.. for example if they came across some great childrens songs from a country writer but didn't work with those types of songs, they might refer them over to another publisher who specialized in that field.. but a country publisher who is pitching to their country competition? Not very smart business if the song is a hit.
