Preach it, brother. It's been said for years here, there's a glut of sad, bittersweet, angry, slow, lecturing, introspective, artsy, self conscious,or moody...generally, negative songs. They are much easier to write.
You beat me to the punchline. I was going to exclude the negative songs written by the artist from the Billboard list.
I've always contended that a new writer needs "door openers," songs that get the attention of the filters. Those are these days ( just as they were 26 years ago when I was listening to songs for Ed Bruce's publishing company, and a few years later when I was writing at Pride Music, Charley Pride's company ) "up, positive songs." A stunningly good, up, positive song will get the doors open. It's the ticket in to the park. It's the ante to the game.
Marc, please describe to the folks a good "door opener." Maybe use a well known song that is the kind that would start to get an unknown noticed.
All the Best, Mike
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music
