Mike, According to my information Saginaw Michigan was a co-write with Bill Anderson. I was under the impression Bill wrote it alone but stand corrected.
I don't have anything against Merle Kilgore, he wrote one of Webb Pierce's early big hits. MORE AND MORE I think. I consider Webb the Artist of the Century.
It has been written a few times that Nashville was trying to part company with Webb's style of whiney nasal type country music. Last I heard Webb has sold some 68 million records and is still in the catalogs. There are not many of the old country artists left. Slim Whitman, Ray Price, Hank Locklin and Jimmy Dickens. Jimmy will probably close the Opry when he goes. A great era for American Music.
A friend and I were discussing the country artists of today versus those of yerterday. I said I would take any 3 from yesterday and beat today's bunch 3 to 1. He said 3 to 0. He was right. True there are a few today that approach the greats of yesterday but I hear none to speak of that I care to buy their CD.
If an artist on a major label today can't sell at least 5 million albums he probably isn't a major artist.
