If you define "traditional" as the early days, then I'd say it was a lot more dangerous to be a Christian in the 1st century. Rumor has it, that the original followers were often killed(but I'll have to check with my resource in Scotland to see if that's a myth or not).

Everything changed over time(sadly), as the rag-tag Jewish sect developed into a powerful institution, but "traditionally", they were a Socialist oriented group of outcasts who were instructed to give up/share all they owned, and were willing to die for their beliefs.

I'm not altogether sure I'd've made the cut...Oh, and to make matters worse, they didn't have indoor plumbing.
