Without that "great" song, none of the other things make any difference. I get a fair amount of indie cuts because of the other things, just got an indie cut yesterday on a recent cowrite, that makes three indie cuts this year so far. But, until I write a great song, It's extremely unlikely that I'll have a major hit.

Songwriters always look for the magic "key.". Well, there is one...write a great song. Do everything possible to improve your writing, expand your experience, learn to feel and communicate. Listen all the time. Listen to the music you are aiming to get cut. Listen to what that music is affected by. Expand. Learn. Work. Read. Do a websearch on "creative writing." If you stopped listening to new music twenty years ago, don't be surprised if your songs sound like it. You don't have to listen to things you don't like, just find new things you like. Stop making excuses and do it. Tie your shoes. Stand up straight. Look me in the eyes when you talk to me. Rotate your tires, and brush your teeth.

It's just that simple.
