Yes, learning the guitar will make you a better songwriter. In fact it is the only way to be a songwriter. You can't be a songwriter without being able to write music. You may, perhaps be able to call yourself a lyricist, but definitely not a songwriter.

This site is all about education, right ? So far, lemme see, 642 pepople have viewed this thread.

I wouldn't like someone who is just starting out, to get the wrong impression and to think that you can write a few lines of words, pay a bunch of session musicians to write the song, and then record it, then call it your own, and then defend the practice as songwriting . It simply isn't.

That practice is simple uncreative lazyness. Heck, if my 6 and 8 yr olds can learn music, one the drums, the other the piano, then there is no excuse for a so-called "words only" adult to at least get a rudimentary grounding in music, to aid what they're doing.

I don't think it's a lyrics vs melody thing. I think it's a lazy vs hard working thing.
