Now, another observation in regards the comment about kids essentially needing a push to listen to music. Maybe so with some kids but not mine, not now and not with my 26 year old when he was a young teen. My 15 and 17 year olds at home are the kind that flip stations like a big dog to hear what they want to hear. They also get on the net and jump all over the place. In their case it's probably driven more by peer pressure than a radio station or record label telling THEM what to listen to.
They, due to a proximity effect, hear lots of music that's way out of the ballpark when it comes to the music shoved down their throats by the labels and, not really surprisingly, they like that music and will also search it out. Ain't no major label on the stuff I normally listen to so that don't always fly.

Something else to think about is this;
These kids, at least the ones that really can think for themselves, will listen to what they want. I've seen kids listen to some of the really well produced music, not in their favorite genre & comment on how great a song that was. Lots of these kids may well listen to some really crappy mp3s and cds but will, if a better quality is available, purchase that better product. They ain't as stupid as some folks think.
