The difference is that anyone can use the Windows format (including Apple if they want) but no one but Apple can use their format which is proprietary. It's the same reason that Radio Free Virgin never worked with Macs (unless they used windows software). Apple is still a tiny single digit percentage of the marketplace, and if they continue to keep everyone else out, it will stay that way. But that's another discussion we've had here before. The iPod Players and technology interestingly enough isn't actually made Apple. Another company makes them and Apple licenses them from that company. The device originally DID work with Windows, but Apple asked for that to be disabled so it would ONLY be proprietary for Apple. So all the blame rests solely on Apples shoulders for being uncompatible with the rest of the world.
