Scott,

iTunes is available for Windows. It acts as a translation from Windows into their proprietary format. iTunes will not output to another player and another service/player cannot port out the files to work on an iPod. Apple chose to remove the windows compatibility within the iPod device so that only they could control, through proprietary means, the stuff that could get onto their iPod using only their software and format. Don't you think all other companies would be happy to make their services available to iPod users if it was possible? Virgin doesn't make a competing player, but I am guessing they WILL soon because of the iPod limitations. It really does ALL fall on Apples lap as to why other services can't work with iPods. They are solely to blame.

I suppose it's a good thing for their hardware business. iTunes is meant to sell iPods.. not music. The music is basically a loss leader. Virgin Digital is approaching it from the opposite direction. What they are offering is a filter. (Actually, a large collection of filters) as well as on demand and great streaming content. For them, it's ALL about the music. It's diametrically opposite of iTunes in that respect.
