How did I ever miss that faithful cover?
After hearing all that wonderful modal counterpoint again, I'm thinking, I bet Norman Whitfield was listening to "modal period" Miles Davis, which is pretty much the early sixties, but makes a come back in his "Bitches Brew" era fusion stuff too. It never occurred to me before, but this song SOUNDS like something Miles Davis himself could have written, right around '70 or so...Aaaaah, the wonderful melting pot that cross pollination brings...
BTW, the rap was classic...
