When Daddy left my mom and me It hurt so much I couldn't even cry But I'd hear Momma crying As I lay in bed and tried to sleep each night I never knew just why he left Thought it must be something that I'd done I know he never would have gone If only I had been the perfect son
Momma had to work so hard I never heard her laugh or saw her smile I knew that she was lonely Since Daddy'd packed his things and said goodbye I tried to make her happy To be the boy she'd want me to become I knew that I could be enough If only I could be the perfect son
Then one day Momma said she'd made a friend And I noticed that she'd started smiling again And when we met, I never would have dreamed How much that man would someday mean to me
When he and Mom got married He said I didn't have to call him Dad But what else would I call The greatest friend that I have ever had Don't know how I got so lucky When it comes to Dad's, he's the perfect one And just the way I am He thinks that I am the perfect son
