If you are ever about to enter a building and have to step over freshly broken doors, windows and glass....stop, turnaround and leave.
Many people did and saved themselves a motherload of $hit. Only misguided fools kept going, such as the hat dude.
That mob could have made a persuasive case for their concerns on the exterior grounds of the Capitol. When they entered the building they destroyed their own momentum with regards to any investigation...and handed their enemies a weapon to beat them down with.
