I guess in a way I'm rejecting the assumption that every line must "stand on its own." I think every line should add something, should propel the thing forward, or add an image or an idea, but if you require every line to somehow be self-sustaining, you're throwing in a restriction that doesn't necessarily have to be there. There are enough "rules" to follow without this one - but then again, I sometimes will have long sentences that "hang over" the end of a line and continue into the next line, metrically speaking, if that makes any sense.

Didn't mean to be glib or purposely obscure before, but I would question the whole idea of too much attention to this rule. Just my .02 -
