Tell that to Paul McCartney who wrote an entire symphony without being able to read music. Of course, it's entirely possible that some folks who did know what was going on polished it up a bit but the songwriting team of Lennon/McCartney broke a lot of rules in their time. Didn't seem to hurt their careers very much. It does seem that those who break the rules have more success when the listening public is ready for something different.
