Aft'noon, folks, I guess my objection to some of the (unstated) assumptions is my disagreement with the idea that there's some secret code to unlock; some mystery which, once unravelled, will enable the writer's work to proceed without interruption, directly to radio "hitdom." AND the idea that this would be a good thing. The other idea I see traces of on these boards is the whole "rules" thing, not that rules are inherently bad, but the idea that IF I follow these rules "hits" will result, or that hits follow rules.
If everyone is following the same rules, folks, we're all gonna end up sounding pretty much the same.
Which, one could argue, is happening now, to various degrees. Trying to make something universal is, to me, a quick trip to blandville. Details are much more interesting.
I guess the luxury I have (I would argue that we all share this luxury, should we choose to exercise it) is that I'm not pursuing hits, simply writing what I feel to be good songs. If occasionally I come up with something that sounds more commercial, I treat it a little differently, and "finish it off" (final editing, choice of words, instrumentation) with that in mind.
And yes, I do believe in the Muses. (but more on that some other time. . . )
Forgive me for digressing from the original subject.
G'day!
