I don't know..
Correct me if I am wrong but... I think Bob Young said once that when he plays a gig and looks out into the audience what he see's is mainly people repeating the lyrics.
So I believe that the lyrics are the most important part and most people don't really care about the melody line.
These folks in the audience are not whistleing the melody line they are shouting out those "lines that stand on their own"
Am I right?
