Seriously, though, my remarks were actually meant to speak more about those folks who may very well have the talent to succeed. They just get so caught up in the mechanics of it all and put so much stock in other people's relative worth that their own efforts simply become counterproductive. I don't know if this stems from a lack of confidence, or what, really.

I've seen aspiring lyricists who exhibited such a natural ability to spin a tale that I felt humbled. What they didn't know was how to format a song, according to the usual conventions. Their spelling wasn't too great, etc. So, folks set about "teaching" them how to "properly" write a song lyric. Yeah, they got a little more polished looking on paper, but it's amusing to me. In my opinion, that person already had lyrical talent that far exceeded most of those who wanted to show them the "right" way to do things. To me, the saddest thing would be if this person had gotten so wrapped up in following the advice of others that the original creative spark was eventually just snuffed out.

Then there's the people who just don't have the talent. I won't go there, though (especially since I might be one of them).
