As Big Jim said, it's been brought up at least several times before.
I think of myself more of a musician than a lyricist or a song writer, because I've played music for more years than I have spent making up my own songs. So it's easy for someone like me to ask "why don't you learn how to play an instrument"? It ain't that easy!
A study of basic music theory might help. Mike Dunbar host's a music theory forum here. Read the posts. Learn the keys. Ask questions if you don't understand.
A musical instrument can cost a lot of money. Before the Internet came around, you had to buy an instrument first. Then make phone calls looking for teachers, buy books, etc. Now you can learn basic music theory first, then decide what you want to do. That doesn't make learning an instrument much easier. It takes commitment, time, and disipline.
