If you can sing in key and without being pitchy you already have an instrument. Your voice.

As for meter. If you can tap your foot and count to four you have your meter maker built in. You just need to learn how masculine and feminine rhymes work an how the syllables are stressed.
Learn "Mary Had a Little Lamb", Tap your foot, and count. That's meter in it's simplest form.

Now to write a commercial song you need one more thing. A Producer that can make the music to fit the genre you want the song performed in.

Colm, right back at you sir...if what you say is true, I can't play an instrument and the lyricists I work with and myself to some degree all write poetic lyrics, then how do I have songs? You don't have to like them, but they are music to my own ears...


Also Brian, you may not read this, but thank you for your posts, when I started all of this people asked me to stop since I couldn't provide my own music and I didn't and I have songs, I appreciate what you say, it means something to me and the journey that I have taken so far.
