I agree John. I feel that learning an instrument would of course help lyricists to write better lyrics, understand phrasing better, just as a songwriting class would, a thesarus, etc..they are all tools. Some people feel more comfortable working on the transmissions of cars, some on the body work, different specialties, though all working on a car. If we felt this way, that we must know everything thing about music if we are to do anything in music, then we might as well, think, as I think Jim suggested, music producers should also know how to sing, set up stages, work the boards, write song/lyrics and play all instruments. Colm, Though learning as much as we can is a bonus, for sure, I don't think someone should be classified as ONLY a lyricist and it be made out to be an inferior thing, as sometimes I have heard it be implied by people who are musicians/singers/lyricists..though usually, they, in my opinion are rarely genius' at all three things.. I have not learned the guitar/piano mostly due to medical problems that are out of my control. And perhaps it is also due to fear of failing yet another goal in my life...so why start and be disapointed in myself more than I am already? I am not joking, but I am ...make sense? Ok..stepping off the soapbox now...if I can do it without breaking my leg. Kimberly
