In 'Tin Pan Alley' years ago, musicians were employed 9 to 5 to write original songs for the sheet music market before advent recorded music.

They developed the 'Old Grey Whistle Test!' After the piano rooms were locked up for the night, the musicians would go down to the cafeteria where the cleaning ladies were working. In order to pick the best tunes to present to the boss the next morning, one musician would whistle the melody while another sang the lyrics! If the old grey haired cleaners like it they keep the song, if they didn't the musicians would disregard it!

Hence the name 'Old Grey Whistle Test!'

Another piece of useless musical history
