A decent lyricist will have a good understanding of rhyme, rhythm and meter. Anything that improves that understanding will help the lyricist hone their skills. The important thing is to learn about rhythm, playing an instrument may help with this but is clearly not essential.
A good lyricist writes words that sing from the page and will therefore have a greater chance of finding a musical collaborator.
