I sometimes turn on C-Span and watch the goings on in government. Now and then there's an interesting set of speeches about some topic.. but mostly it's stuff like Bill described. What I rarely hear is anything actually important to the people across the US. And most of the speeches, even if well written, rarely get to the heart of the issue at hand.

There's a lot (like 99%) of what goes on in a government job that we never know about and that would likely bore us to tears. We seem to only want to deal with the political "highlight" reels that get coverage and the truth is these little issues actually do add up to making everything work (or not work depending on your view). Boring things like local ordinances to the masses really do affect local people's lives. Having a street lamp working is a big deal locally but not beyond that in a given city. On a national stage, little things like relationships with Korea may not seem relevent, but to those doing business there, it matters. It's hard for us to really know which little thing is actually important in the bigger picture and which big thing may be nothing but grandstanding and fodder to keep a 2 party system in place.
