Then it isn't going to work in the long haul. It was a noble thing to do during the depression, but they should have started "weaning" folks from it a long time ago. Before the population ebbs and flows caused a shortfall, and before they started raiding it for other projects, robbing Peter to pay Paul, all for votes. Instead, the Social Security crash may cause real problems. Government trying to cure social problems.

I have nothing against folks who work for the government. My wife has worked for the State of Tennessee for twenty years. I've been employed by the State of Tennessee, the City of Nashville, and the Federal Government. The government does a lot of things right, social engineering is not one of them.

Also, like you, I am not a fan of big government, however I am not railing without considering that it's filled with people like you and I. Of course it is. I'm railing with much consideration. I can send a letter across the country for the price of a stamp, but I can upload a song on the internet for free and have it played around the world to thousands of people, unless the Government starts slapping taxes and regulations on it. Regulations to control our lives and taxes to fund poorly run social programs.
