I have to disagree with you on this, Mike. I think social security has worked brilliantly over the long haul. Have seen too many examples to think otherwise....

Yeah, it will run out of money unless changes are made - but this is primarily because we're living longer.

In a more general sense, I disagree with the notion that the private sector is necessarily better at doing things things than government. I am an employee of a state government and my wife is an employee of the federal government. Both of us have yet to see a single example where outsourcing of work to the private sector has made things better. It might save some on the bottom line but any savings are more than compensated for by the poor quality of service that is received.

I'm no fan of big government - but I think sometimes people rail against government without considering it is filled with people much like them - just trying to do a good job. It amazes me when people gripe about a stamp costing 42 cents. I say to them, "For 42 cents you can send a letter from New York to LA and be fairly certain it will get there within a few days. How can you possibly see this as anything other than miraculous?"
