There used to be a law where spitting on the sidewalk was a crime. It was imposed because people used to spit tobacco and then others would slip on it and fall. It's out-moded today because people don't chew as much tobacco.

Heidi, I'm not correcting you because we both may be right. I've always believed that the "Spitting on sidewalk" law was imposed because of the spread of Tuberculosis. Barefoot people could step in it.
