Ahh...smoking bans - the universal outrage of the western world!

As an ex-smoker, I find the smoke free bars and restaurants of Ireland and the UK a delight. What I find less pleasing is that the streets are now choked with smoldering litter bins, which now all come fitted with their own ashtray. And there are the poor frozen smokers, all hurriedly puffing away during breaks, making every alleyway and covered shop front seem like some sort of fumigation chamber. I don't miss being a smoker (I gave up long enough ago that it seems a slightly ridiculous activity), but I do think the demonisation of smokers is just an example of picking on folks who can't really fight back (being a minority, not because they're out of breath) - although in hundred years from now, smoking might seem as bizarre as the Victorians taking laudanum and cocaine pills for aches and pains...maybe...
