Well, Personal tastes play a role, but im not talking about what I like and what i dont, Im talking about songwriting as a whole.
I learned some time ago that, just because people like something, doesnt make it great.
Not many people like classical music, but to deny it's greatness is foolish. and To think that because you prefer Brittany Spears, that she is a better artist than Mozart, you just prefer her. There is no contest there, Mozart destroys Brittany Spears in everything BUT, entertainment. Not an opinion a fact, from a craft standpoint
A jazz musician who practices his life away, understands that not many people will acknowledge him for his dedication and his hard work, he does it because of love of his craft.
Just because songs are used on TV or Movies, or in cheesy pop songs, it doesnt mean that songwriting as an art form is flourishing, just means a subset of songwriting can make some money.
Art has no monetary value by itself, the market put value on it.
If you goal is to get a song on TV for example, the craft of songwriting doesnt play much of a role, just being a song technician.
I agree there are all kinds of songs, all types of purposes, no one size fits all, but the craft of song songwriting is ONE thing, not 100.
Bruno Mars can never and should never win a songwriting contest, when the criteria is craft, if the criteria is fun pop song, we have a winner!
