You left out the first part. Songwriting is bigger than ever. More people are taking part in it. Sites like this allow people to write their own songs and share them with each other. It's the "karaoke-ing" of songwriting. Look at ReverbNation, SoundCloud, SongRamp, and any number of other inappropriately capitalized synthesized words. Now, has it stayed as dominant in popular music? No. Its audience has fragmented and diluted as their friends and families have joined in the game. In a word ItHasChangedAWholeBunch.
Would Bob Dylan have done as well in this day and age? I'll bet he's been downloaded, streamed and youtubed as much as he ever sold.
