I think what you might see as a downturn in the craft of songwriting is really just an over supply of songs available to choose from. the sheer number of people now creating and selling music - compared to say 1960 - is mind blowing. the big label money men have no concept or desire to know what might be written well - if it sells then it's good. so what you hear as a part of national or international musical releases is no indication of the quality of songwriting around.
try listening to every artist in a single genre on CDbaby. you will hear many great songs - and many more not so great - but it will take you a very long time to wade through it all.
the cream does not always rise to the top - sometimes it's the scum that rises.
Songwriting is as good as it's ever been. Better in some cases since there is so much more music from which to draw inspiration.
