Not Guilty" in a Legal Context: A "not guilty" verdict means the jury or judge found that the prosecution did not meet its burden of proof to prove the defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. It doesn't necessarily mean the defendant is innocent, but rather that the prosecution's case was insufficient to convince the jury or judge of guilt. A "not guilty" verdict can result from various factors, including insufficient evidence, doubts about the prosecution's case, or even mistakes in the investigation or presentation of evidence. "Innocent" in a Legal Context: "Innocent" refers to the actual state of not having committed the crime, regardless of the outcome of the trial. It is a question of fact, not a legal finding, and a "not guilty" verdict does not necessarily mean that the defendant is innocent. A person could be found "not guilty" due to legal technicalities or weaknesses in the prosecution's case, even if they actually committed the crime.
