We had too many people get it day one without paying a dime into it. And now the baby boomers generation is gobbling up the remainin resources and the government stole the funds for other programs (which should never have been allowed.. that money SHOULD have stayed in the fund with payments coming out of the interest.. but of course it didn't). It was criminal.. but we collectively elected the criminals from both parties to do it.

Now, they'd have to raise taxes beyond what would be accepted by the mass public to get it back in order. No one will get elected (or stay in power) who raises taxes that high. So they're all using band aid short term fixes which actually make the problem worse and worse. Meanwhile, life expectancy had increased so much that people are drawing on that fund 20-30-40 years now.. something FDR didn't really fully plan for at the time he created it. All those things have conspired to ruin it.

Anyone who is still working and doesn't have a 401K themselves or via their spouse is going to be eating dog food should they live to be 80.. it's going to be a sad situation.
