The singer-songwriter has the best chance to make it today. If you are a fairly good singer that writes fairly good songs, go to the labels, that is what they are looking for. If you are a great writer but can't sing or if you are a great singer that can't write, your chances are slim to nil of making it.
The labels have given up on looking through 1000 songs to find ten to suit their singers on their labels. They would sooner sign singer/songwriters with their own supply of songs. They may not sell as many CDs, but they have most of the radio stations under their control(through money) playing their songs(because they now take some of the publishing on these song) they now get their share of millions of airplay royalties for the songs, plus in countries that now pay (not the US) royalties to the record labels, they make more millions. While they control the airplay and get their share, they are not too concerned about the quality of the singer or the songs, just as long as they are competitive with the other major labels. The indie labels may be putting out way better stuff but they don't have the money to buy their way into the radio monopoly. That is my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
