I agree with Jody that the wheel just keeps spinning, creating different sets of musical values for the times. Just as beards are now popular with young men, things come and go, with different meanings. So even if we're just talking mainstream pop, I would answer, "No, songwriting is not dead." Anything you consider great songwriting is likely to become popular again within weeks...it will just look a little different.
