Great is of course, subjective. There has always been great stuff and fluff. But songs that pass the test as being well crafted songs, is what Im talking about.

If not one person likes a particular song, somebody who teaches songwriting can still listen or look at the lyric and say "wow, what a masterful piece of songwriting" just nobody wants to hear it.

You see it every year at the grammy awards, greatness is measured by public reception and record sales, not by the art or craft.

I dont know if I'd use the word "intellectual" it doesnt have to be fancu or smart or philosophical.

Does it demonstrate an understanding of the craft of songwriting, techniques used, understanding what they are doing as opposed to just putting words and music together.

In reality, my favorites are not well crafted intellectual songs, nor do I write well crafted intellectual songs, all of the time.

Im just proposing the question. songwriting as a craft, is it a lost art form? yeah im talking pop music, but to me, if great crafted music is being made, and not being heard, that proves that the average joe doesnt want it. That was the original point I was making.

They want hooky, beaty songs, not well crafted songs.

What would shelia davis teach her students about todays hits?

She's probably looking for work since her services are no longer helpful to anyone looking to market their music.

To me it dont matter, I like different music for different reasons, if not another timeless classic is written, we have enough already.

Really what it comes down to is do the types of things people critique on forums matter as far as landing a song somewhere.
