I don't think you have to believe in God to be a well behaved person or to have integrity or good work ethics. I guess you can put stealing in there as well. I know it is one of the commandments but there are cultures that have never read the Ten Commandments and stealing is still a no-no for them. They feel so strong about it they will cut your hand off if you get caught.
I wonder which message got across the best to their kids.
Message one; Now son, there is a great being that lives up in the sky and he says if you don't steal he will give you milk and honey when you die. But if you do steal it's OK as long as you believe in him because he forgives you and will give you the milk and honey anyway. Message two; Now son, I need to warn you. If you steal anything and you get caught we are gonna cut your hand off.
Now I have to ask. Which one will be most effective.
