Jim, equality is exactly the same as being the same. Equality by definition means being equal. What you are speaking about is "fairness." Bill's idea of what is fair may not be the same as mine. There are as many ideas of "fair" as there are people. That's where God comes in. He provides an eternal perspective. He also came up with a better way to treat people than as if they are equal or by trying to be fair to someone who has a different definition of fair. God says treat others, not as they wish to be treated, but as you would wish to be treated yourself.
