John,
Firstly, I'm sorry to hear about the deaths in your family. I've been through a similar situation in the past few years. Believe it or not, it makes you stronger.
When much loved people die, I like to think there is a heaven of some sort. Maybe not the simplistic idea of a people floating around in white robes, but free from earthly constraints.
For me, those who died are living in our memories. That's how they carry on in life. We living souls have been handed their spirit, and we accept it, and carry on with our own enriched life.
Heaven and hell is a very human concept. I don't believe it's that clear cut. The only time I will be able to know what happens after death is the very time when my brain will cease to function.
However, I hope we all live on in the minds of others.
