You did something wrong & right at the same time.
Many writers won't record or demo something until they thinks it's a hit, or can get a cut, or even gets put on hold etc....
Basically I wont do it until I'm good enough"

Many of those writers NEVER record any songs lol...
When are we ever good enough or know which song is gonna do the best?

You learned a whole process at once, if you don't have ANY recording to play for others how is anyone gonna take you seriously,want to collaborate, basically hear YOU>

This is how you improve, in all aspects. So aside from spending some money, which you can say you invested in YOU. You lost nothing here only gained. Hey no demo, what what you have posted here? lol smile

PS - If you don't record any at home I suggest you start. or keep developing away to get song ideas down so you can listen back and continue to work them out and redraft etc...
Invest in that a bit first then go for the demo's after taking an outside look and getting some feedback
