The music industry is surely a strange beast. It has to cater to the voracious appetites of the public at large, who seem to prefer junk food over substantial food that nourishes the body and soul. I rarely listen to mainstream radio, and when I do, I don't "get" what a lot of folks seem to be excited about. Most of the artists that inspire me and end up being the "soundtracks", so to speak, of my daily life will never have those "hits" that everyone is humming to.

You are a sweetheart for taking the time to listen and do WAY more than any Publisher or Label would ever do.

Thanks again for critiquing my song for me! Folks usually enjoy that one and it's a fun one to sing.

Thanks, Yes I never listen to mainstream radio either. Well actually I do, I make it my business to listen to a whole bunch of songs in a row on the most popular station.

And being a person who usually finds something to give credit for,some good point.. I'm having a hard hard time doing that these days.
I have NEVER heard so many unappealing songs being played at one time. A half way decent one seems like a great one because of what's around it.

I know it's just not my or our world musically anymore but bad lyric and bad melody and over cheesy sound is not an age thing.
Again I'll never buy that crap about "it's not your music era"
If I love music 20 to 100 years before I was born, than 40 years after shouldn't be a problem lol..

But here's the thing there are some very good artist out there and some very good songs. Just the best are not the most popular unlike years past.
I try to remember myself what i tell others, I'm not writing any "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" but neither is ANYBODY else at any level ANYWHERE! smile

When I had just about given up, I caught the Abbey Roads Session series on cable TV. And I saw and heard some very good music, all of it was from England 75% figures.. Some were big hits and some substantial enough hits top 40 at one point.

I can still tell a good hit from a not so good hit song to a bad hit song. And I can usually tell why it's a hit. The number one thing though in most cases is the oldest thing one simple word
"CATCHY" and the thing that's been really sweeping the nation lately "Annoyingly Catchy" That is a great technique whether the artists mean to or not. Ya wanna get somebodies attention? Annoy them... Songs that literally do the Nah,nah,nahnah....nah!
Child chant.

But either way aside from the same one after another hip hop & nickeback rock sounding song a song is gonna need "something" to make it stand out especially for a sole songwriter, bands and artists get away with TONS more, murder in many cases actually.

If Norah Jones depended on selling lyrics to eat she would have vanished literally. And she's a Grammy winner.

So that "something" one or a combination is - A catchy tune, a great voice, a great style, very contemporary where kids know your sound and style of lyrics. a good title, lyrics that FIT your style. High energy...

Lots of times good songs never get to the radio, if they don't fit "what's happening" in one of those main popular genres.
Big Jim's got one up here right now that falls directly into that snag.

We have too much nowadays so music has just become a PROCESS like printing a newspaper.
