Lets address number # 3 since that was Clive's main issue with the song.

Okay I'll be the first to say they are not earth shattering lyrics no "Cats In The Cradle" But are they right for the music?
Were all the other HITS the labels were putting out loaded with better more substantial words?

Lets see... here are some lyrics from the BIG hits of that time period in this genre.

Hmmm I don't see it do you?
So once again a record label or publisher can TALK about one thing and DO another.

Nope I'm not convinced any of these hit song lyrics are any better at all.

#3 I think the lyrics fit the style perfectly. I will say it would be nice if they had a bigger break through fresh perspective/theme say like. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" "Like A Virgin"
But the many many other more dance hits of the later part of the decade weren't like those either.

This also shows you yet again that your best chance is with something very new and fresh, original and unique. WE can't count on just being as good,equal too what is on the radio most of the time.

Speaking of Taylor Dane and this subject we had a different song the year before played on a Philly Radio station for a few weeks. Same singer as the artist. The station sent our indie record label a chart/poll with a letter saying they had been getting lots of request for our song. The chart had us THIRD overall and ahead of Taylor Dane even. Another big song was on that chart called "Pump Up The Jam"

So I'll answer these questions since Louis didn't listen to music in the 1980's

#1 - Yes this style was all over the radio at the time. I made the adjustment from my ROCK and Acoustic Rock styled songs over to an R&B dance style. I love that style anyway so it easy for me to find my soul in any music. Also the production was not out of hand yet at the time

#2 - I felt the background vocals were almost as catchy as the lead. especially the "I don't want to talk about, think about it" lines. Easy to follow verse and catchy chorus. perhaps the singer who could belt should have gotten to it sooner on the choruses.

#3 - answered that above

#4 - The singer Stacy 19- 20 years old at the time was totally contemporary.
Not only in vocal but in image as well. She did have a very short career. But she could rock out as well as be soulful. She had pipes as you can obviously hear on this demo. No problem there.

#5 - I had no problem with the sound, I actually like it a lot. It is bass heavy which is VERY important in clubs. You are hearing a mixdown from CASSETTE so bear that in mind. The lead I did was a bit thin, they weren't use to tracking guitars of this type and we had no amp either. Just a pedal to the board.
This is a very solid recording. Just shy perhaps of releasable
material...

#6 - Arrangement well the lenght is perfect 3:30

Great drop down in the second verse, very effective. Did not have to wait for the chorus or feel like you were waiting and the verse was smooth and catchy.

Big contrast in verse and chorus.. ending chorus with the multi background counter points were a big boost.

A bridge in this case may have helped instead of a solo, just to shoot off one more musical change and additional lines.

This was gonna be one of those cases were we were gonna need a break on a song. We had been paying our dues with this label for six years at this point. Even though the song was far more suitable and better in many regards we were close with our band six years earlier.

Geez much to think about going back to the drawing board
