I think most songwriters who have collaborated or have spent time in bands have the built in general understanding of the written & unwritten rules we have. Just like any other profession really.

The thing that struck me about what Pete said was:
"so regardless what you want to ultimately pursue Sub, I'm thinking this is a song I'd like to pitch. Bet you didn't know you were writing a country song."

That approach will get you few co-writes with anyone, even if nothing was definite and some could be taken as humerous like (you were writing a country song)

"regardless of what I want to pursue" ? sounds like regardless of what i want to do...
